In the 21st Century, most of all in the U.S., most families rely on their car to get them to work, school, and various other hobbies and activities.
Needless to say we're on the market for a new car, or I am at least. We're still in the midst of talking, researching and deciding, so this blog post seemed appropriate.
We spend a lot of time in our car and we depend on it to work for us, so it really is important that we know how to choose the ideal family car.
With that in mind, I’ve put together some tips to help you choose the perfect family car when the time comes to browse Edmunds or hit the dealership to see what is available. Check them out below.
Look for modern safety features
If you have young children, then keeping them safe in the car can be challenging, but it is also pretty much at the top of every parent’s priority list. That’s why, when you’re buying a family car, the first thing you’re going to want to look at is which safety features are included.
A good place to start with this is by checking out the car safety ratings. All vehicles in the US will have been rated for safety, so choosing one with a high rating when you have kids just make sense.
As well as standard things like child locks, other safety features you might want to look out for include:
Blindspot assistance
Collision avoidance
Lane warning systems
All of these things will make it less likely that you have an accident, which means you can keep your kids safe
Look for child-friendly features
When you have kids, things tend to get ruined, but cars are expensive so you don’t want that to happen to your vehicle. That’s why you should look for car that boasts child-friendly features like treated upholstery that can wipe clean and vehicle entertainment systems that will keep the little terrors distracted so they won’t start bickering or having a tantrum while you’re driving.
Look for plenty of storage space
If you’re a busy family with lots of activities and hobbies, then looking for a family car with lots of storage space really is a no-brainer. If you have to take one kid to hockey practice complete with sticks, another fishing with their rod and tackle box, another shopping, and then you need to cart around your stuff too, it’s easy to fill the car fast if it’s too small for your needs, and then you’ll need to make multiple trips. Don’t make that mistake and make storage space a priority.
Look for a car with lots of doors
Three-door hatchbacks may be fine when you don’t have kids, but when you are a parent, you need to ensure there is easy access for as many of you as possible. When children have to clamber to get in the car, they are more likely to argue or scuff up the paintwork, and that will, I’m sure you agree, be less than ideal.
Finding the perfect family car can be challenging but there are more great family cars been made every year and if you spend a little time finding the right one it will make all of your lives easier.
