3 Tips To Make More Sustainable Fashion Choices

Fast fashion is a serious problem in modern society.

As a collective, we’ve all become obsessed with buying the latest things and finding an outfit for every occasion. It gets to the point where our wardrobes are full of clothes that we barely wear.

Aside from being harmful to your bank balance, this is also terrible for the planet. Fast fashion leads to so much waste, not to mention it leads to loads of carbon emissions from clothes manufacturers working overtime.

With that in mind, how do you make more sustainable fashion choices?

Buy more pre-owned clothes

It’s okay to buy brand new things once in a while - especially if you have a big event coming up. But, it makes a lot of sense to start purchasing pre-owned clothes more often. You can do this on sites like eBay or Depop - and you can always visit local thrift stores too.

Essentially, this means you’re repurposing old clothes and stopping them from going to waste. It is way better for the environment, and far more sustainable than if you constantly buy brand new things.

While you’re at it, donate or sell old clothes to other people, putting them back in the system and preventing more waste!

Get versatile clothing

Versatile clothing refers to items that can be worn in many different situations and circumstances. These clothes can be worn in winter, spring, summer, and fall. Or, these clothes can be worn formally, casually, and everywhere in between.

If you have clothing that can be worn more often and across different seasons or scenarios, it prevents you from constantly needing to buy new stuff. This limits your purchases, saving money while also being more sustainable.

Be more conscious of your jewelry

Lastly, you can’t forget about your jewelry if you want to make sustainable fashion choices. Jewelry is a great accessory to every outfit, but it’s one of the least ethical and sustainable things money can buy.

Mining for the raw materials used to create jewelry can be so damaging to the environment. At the same time, it can be awfully unethical, forcing people to work in terrible conditions.

Consequently, you need to make better decisions when buying jewelry. Try to find dealers that offer more sustainable and ethical options. Places like Brilliant Earth make a conscious decision to source and sell sustainable jewelry.

You should look for companies like this as they can tell you exactly where everything comes from, giving you peace of mind that you’re making a better decision.

Just like that, you can start making better fashion purchases. Look, we’re all guilty of fast fashion from time to time - and it’s not something we’re aware of. But, the simple fact is that we’re buying too much, wasting too much, and harming the planet. We need to be more sustainable in our approach to fashion, and these tips will help you do just that.

To summarize: buy more pre-owned items, find clothes you can wear more often, and be more conscious of your purchases to find more sustainable alternatives.
